He has to be one of the most talented humans on the planet – and that is to say nothing of his infectious JOY.

We could not wait to see him live. While Al provided the highest level of entertainment, Jon provided something a little different. He provided an experience. He invited his audience to be active participants in the concert. He lead us through dance moves. He coached us on lyrics. He reached out and made contact with people near the stage. He marched through the crowds to the bleachers in the back of the event space to ensure everyone felt included in the magic of the unfolding moment. While I couldn’t stop smiling and giggling with Al, I felt myself overcome with emotion with Jon, choking back tears in parts. It felt almost spiritual, and I felt something like an internal shifting by the end.

I have been thinking a lot about the two experiences, and I realized today that my frame for the two concerts was similar to my frame for many books. There are books that I love, because they provide me entertainment and escape (sometimes when I need it most). And there are other books that I love, because they crack something open in me and leave me changed. Both are valuable in their own right. But they are different experiences.

Listen, friends, I know this is all subjective (as is the case with most creative offerings), so I will simply leave you with a challenge to embrace those experiences that bring you joy, maybe particularly those that leave a lasting imprint. And make sure to offer a little gratitude to the Universe when you’re lucky enough to find them. And perhaps even consider how you might pay some of that goodness forward.

What I’m Reading (some spoilers included)

American Fantasy (4 stars)

by Emma Straub

This book was such a breath of fresh air! Emma offers us something creative, well crafted, and resonant.

I really enjoyed all of the characters, perhaps especially Alice and Keith (two of the primary figures). They were written with such care, and I could easily inhabit their experiences throughout the novel.

I also loved the premise. As someone who relates (perhaps too much) with the fandom in this book (no cruises - but definitely a lot of concerts… and fantasies), I ate this up. I imagined Joey, Jordan, Danny, Donny, and John (my favorite - I know, I know). While the characters in the novel are not my beloved NKOTB, I could not help but see glimpses of them.

While I must admit to being at least a bit confused/disappointed at the end (as there were questions I felt we never got satisfactorily answered - and I really wanted THE ending), I would be lying to say I didn't countdown to spending time in this book (and finished it in record time).

Now I really need to ensure I've read all of Emma's previous works!

If you’re interested in giving it a go yourself: https://bookshop.org/a/120532/9798217046850

Rabbit, Rabbit (4 stars)

by Jennifer E. Smith

I was grateful to receive an early copy of Jennifer's new novel, as it has not yet been released.

First things first: This was one of my favorite reads of the year!

The main characters were really well rendered, likable and complex, with a legitimately complicated relationship predicament. This careful attention to story structure kept me invested.

BUT, I must admit that the narrative did fall into the trap of so many books in this genre, visiting and revisiting (and revisiting again) the same predicament. Sometimes with long stretches of time passing between the revisiting, which made it increasingly difficult to embrace.

I also thought the ending was far too rushed. If we needed to cover that much time in so few pages, maybe we don't need chapter breaks for each stretch of time (giving us chapters that are only one to two pages long). It threw off the pacing for me.

All of that acknowledged, I really enjoyed this narrative. I think it covers an important topic - and does that topic justice (and again... those main characters!) Sometimes we are lead to believe that people have stopped reading books, but it is in these moments that I am assured that there are still plenty of folks willing to battle dense crowds to get a tote full of quality reading material. There is still hope for our society, friends! I have seen it with my own eyes! Hurrah!

It was also an absolute delight to meet and chat with local authors at the event. I sometimes forget that there is so much literary talent tucked into this little area of the country. What a joy to spend a few minutes hearing about the inspiration for specific narratives or learning of an author’s favorite of their own books (hint: it’s not always the one you might think).

If you have the chance to attend a local book festival this year (wherever you are in the world), I highly recommend the experience. Buy the books! Meet the folks who pen the books! Chat excitedly with the other bookish humans who are just as giddy about reading as you are! It’s a rush!

P.S. We also had the pleasure of attending an annual, summer reunion with our dearest friends this month. There was hugging, eating, story swapping, and... DANCING! The dancing, friends! What an unexpected highlight! I had not danced like that in as long as I can remember. Talk about a rush! So, go to the book festivals AND do all the dancing! My secret (or not so secret) recipe for summer bliss.

What I’m Reading (some spoilers included)

When Women Were Dragons

By Kelly Barnhill

This novel left me a bit conflicted. The concept had so much potential (women transforming into dragons – as metaphor - sign me up). And there were bits of this book that also offered genuinely lovely prose (Kelly is obviously a capable writer).

BUT it did not all come together for me. I couldn't buy into the magical (metaphor) aspect the way I wanted to, because it seemed to keep shifting on me. And I couldn't buy into the realism aspect, because I didn't have enough information.

The story created so many interesting questions, but it didn’t quite answer them (at least to my satisfaction). Are all women dragons? Why do some change and not others? Why did the protagonist not change? Also, how would her father get away with hiding she and her "sister" in an apartment across town for years without anyone figuring it out? And why wouldn't she confront him? Threaten to disclose his betrayal? And why did her aunt return? And where had she been? And why did any of the women who'd chosen to dragon return for that matter? Wasn't the leaving of their "before" selves/lives the point?

As you can see, while I really wanted to love this narrative, there were just too many things that weren't satisfactorily addressed.

Also... I really (REALLY) wanted the protagonist to dragon in the end, as I felt we were building to that. So, I left this one disappointed on that front, as well. Still, I don't regret reading (and definitely want to read some of Kelly's other books).

If you’re interested in giving it a go yourself: <a href="https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furl764.authorwebsitemessages.com%2Fls%2Fclick%3Fupn%3Du001.NOhJnNNf-2BKUz3KTz7sCkL5jzoJKdi76gNqcXYnx4TYvvV424WcFk5Wf8MZKRZGzDVkzqDmcnMDuPKWJ3QS3s9w-3D-3DZvvh_E-2BhTyK9YehDiFN3twAVapWit-2BTnF5oeYR1fJcUWflzBiFRu53fsQfmRu9FNIMqNg9r-2Fc9lHyyfj-2BDuWYGlgohdaEtsfOE8LkZIpF2OTBLtBtCfwcjbmNXQ0Rw7TtoM4vlOWhgQf-2B1eVR9Q4MoVOgTCSI5VYrDhZ6njGnQIRS-2Bo6y0K2W-2BSYIIoQ20JjosxJZ21VpOJ0GAz5WMN7dd4wwLjug7f8OQpziFeWSxP34P6qYjS-2Ff0ruw6IKqWJVKtyaQbAYty06MWQOnQ73h6-2BzVxCEuik1e5D60qReIP1IFu5QKyr8XZYEg1aPb-2BCST-2BMtyRJ-2Fv6bH8Q-2BPeOj-2FWQae72iRsfpHeHA7-2BEVLQcA55nYoutki02unqvZFNtNEqU2sZbPqGHjIlic5ZhKeCLvgAtIKrp5IDjjB0wEce1EAS4hgTDiUIAx12X4D2ntC9ShkT6sZMeol-2BcH18cRTD-2F-2Bj6H6Jg7L4CUuo4q3lIv-2FM-2Fmx1c6WY61fRBh5hwcyU-2FhSTNSytW1yho4qTi3iL1MTneBA-3D-3D&data=05%7C02%7C%7C37a6045324f24e5a210508df051d6da3%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C639235296093825789%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=1pBCXT3ne%2Fzg4BwF9k%2FmiDsbMSNxatMgqqXLRiirdng%3D&reserved=0" I absolutely loved the job (even with the inevitable ups and downs). And the pay for adjunct professors wasn’t as abysmal as all of the rumors would have you believe - IT WAS WORSE.

And for those of you who asked for photo evidence of the Cancun study sessions (mentioned in the June newsletter), I am sorry to report I can’t find pics from the trip. But, in lieu of that, I give you this.

AUGUST BOOK HAUL

We had the opportunity to attend the annual Pacific Northwest Book Festival (as mentioned above), and while it was ridiculously crowded (yay, people still read books), we did manage to nab at least a few bookish treats.

One Final Note
As many of you know, we lost our beloved Dolly Parton this month. She was an integral part of my childhood, and I have loved her always. [Did anyone else watch Smoky Mountain Christmas as a kid?] In addition to being a spectacular story teller, she was always unapologetically herself. And even as her fame grew, she somehow found a way to make room for everyone at her table. She was a hero, and I would be lying if I didn’t say that the world feels a little more uncertain without her in it. But I’m trying to remember what Dolly would have us do in this moment, and I’m pretty sure she’d say, “Get on with it, girl.” So, I shall try. Hopefully with an extra dose of her creativity, faith, generosity, grit, and joy.

RIP, beloved Dolly.

As always, thank you all for joining me on this leg of my journey. Please don’t forget to hit me up with some of your responses to posed questions. I always love hearing from you!

And if you have other bookish friends who might enjoy my newsletter content, please (please) feel free to share. I’d really love to grow this community.

July also afforded me the opportunity for a MUCH OVERDUE reunion with my beloved writing group, and I am happy to report that we adore each other as much in person as over Zoom.

What I’m Reading (some spoilers included)

Moss’d in Space

By Rebecca Thorne

This was certainly a cozy, sci-fi read, and I enjoyed many aspects of it (especially the character of Moss). I do admit to wishing there was more tension in parts of the narrative, many of the obstacles were just a bit too easily resolved. And I did find myself thinking that I wanted to spend more time in certain spaces and less in others (as they weren't overly important to the unfolding story). Critique acknowledged, if you are looking for a fun, summer read, this is worth a look.

https://bookshop.org/a/120532/9781250414144

I read a few “Christmas in July” books this month, as well (as I will take all of the happy vibes I can get my hands on right now). Though not my favorite of her books, I did certainly enjoy parts of this Emily Stone offering

[Also read this month: Same Time Next Summer, The Eight Heartbreaks of Hannukah]

For more book reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/88169319-gina-ma?ref=nav_mybooks&shelf=read

[Please note: The links for purchasing books are affiliate links and will offer me a small percentage of the purchase price if you choose to grab your copy of recommended books through their site. If you choose to utilize, thanks for the support!]

What I’m Watching
Because we are still celebrating Gen X Summer, I have been revisiting many of my fave movies from childhood/adolescence (Retro TV/Movie Mondays has given me plenty of opportunity).

Princess Bride, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Big, Can’t Buy Me Love, Home Alone, Good Will Hunting, She’s All That, Beauty and the Beast, The Parent Trap, Sense and Sensibility, Say Anything, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Groundhog Day, Toy Story, Sleepless in Seattle, Big Business, Clueless, Speed, Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, Father of the Bride, etc, etc, etc.

All so nostalgic!

We also spent our 4th of July hiding at a local movie theater to escape the fireworks/explosions that plague our area most of the evening. The silver lining of needing to flee our home was that we got to see TWO movies back-to-back (very Gen X Summer). So, I can now recommend Supergirl AND Toy Story 5 (though you should know that I am not known for being an overly reliable movie critic).

Any Gen X gems (or fun, recent releases) that I need to add to my summer queue?

What I’m Writing
I am taking a break from most writing projects for the summer to rest and reset. I was starting to lose joy in the process, which was, unsurprisingly, hindering my creativity. I am trying to fully enjoy these Gen X Summer months and looking forward to hopping back into my writing practice in the fall.

What’s Making Me Smile

Few things make me smile like silly dog videos, and this one is stellar.

https://youtu.be/t7s2IUh1LjE?si=EzMQAYqH4Z3yDpME

If you have stumbled upon anything extra delightful lately, I always love a good laugh!

A Little Unsolicited Writing Advice
It’s okay to take a break. That’s all I’ve got for this month, friends.

Just a permission.

For you and me.

BONUS: A Random Fact About Me (For Fun?)
I passed my professional counselor’s licensing exam in 2004 and must give at least some of the credit to the week I spent studying on in Cancun with a few friends the week prior.

And to all of the random strangers who heard of my poolside studying and popped by to quiz me. It takes a village :)

And for those of you who asked for photo evidence of the PV beach dancing from my wedding (mentioned in the June newsletter), I give you this.

JULY BOOK HAUL

Just thought I’d share one of my independent bookstore book hauls from this month. This was our first visit to Brick & Mortar Books in Redmond, but it won’t be our last.

God, I love an independent bookstore!

As always, I want to sincerely thank you all for joining me on this leg of my journey. If you have other bookish friends who might enjoy my newsletter content, please feel free to share. I'd love to grow this community.

And don’t forget to hit me up with some of your responses to posed questions. I always love hearing from you!

Gina

Our totally tubular Swatch watches (mentioned in the previous newsletter) definitely fit right in with all of the Gen X vibes.

What I’m Reading

Shark Heart: A Love Story

By Emily Habeck

Warning: Big Spoilers Ahead.

I was completely enamored with this book... for the first 1/3. I LOVED the storyline related to Wren and Lewis. Their love story. His devastating diagnosis and transformation. Their heartbreaking goodbye. I even told my husband, "This is going to be in my TOP TEN reads of all-time." I felt confident of it. But then... Lewis swam away, and I still had over 200 pages left. The story went off the rails for me after that... never to return. The style got more wonky. The story got less coherent. And I just could not get the myriad of pieces to fit together in a satisfying way. Even my final hope of a meaningful ending was thwarted when there was no brand of reunion with Lewis in the ocean. Also, how did Wren get pregnant when Lewis was a shark? One of many confounding questions I was left with at the end of this novel. All of that to say... FIVE STARS for the start. TWO STARS for the rest. Could have been magic! [Still 100% worth a read.]

<a href="https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furl764.authorwebsitemessages.com%2Fls%2Fclick%3Fupn%3Du001.NOhJnNNf-2BKUz3KTz7sCkL5jzoJKdi76gNqcXYnx4TYstZZObh2L5FBM85nPxAwpw9-2FPEdizxxK24aR-2B-2BUnIxLg-3D-3DFKRw_E-2BhTyK9YehDiFN3twAVapWit-2BTnF5oeYR1fJcUWflzBiFRu53fsQfmRu9FNIMqNg9r-2Fc9lHyyfj-2BDuWYGlgohbO3aFUznHMu-2BjYj8xbyk-2BhBcVi5ply56LAWUGs-2BAsTLmwTKeDv-2BpTTRfJO69T-2B2g3tOf8y1HdvcHdN4qavUdkC2JpDk4w8Jt8oJ-2F5w3VzEF0s6JmjtzJj6bfWIIzwBoWm0QBnj8HylV34cuY-2BTzbFj6aPlH2sWzXkl7bZXlcI3SmWq203GWRaC-2BQMZX1d4QgPJChvhxViWerV1D8XNY5i0PJf-2BlkVXvD0heWMkbRc8MS82Otfsw7D5dVSBd8bG5TrYvHNH7sgTJxwmc3AOADE-2F4xwDkhhffMCRsJGBebwMJIf7s396veEFKGrysTHq9gecPNyLx-2B-2Bb6iNISTaftXBCtmHzRTwp4bIWO2GIKBLXQQJ5AJUgRBxvhGL6wYYEANmQmD4M9M8yBL6FkPZdqdIz-2F-2FLhWCVItIhDaliVRCtO77jOJxWoMaQr8E1bdKLa6BA-3D-3D&data=05%7C02%7C%7Cd2a0148bb2df4d65e70708ded39bfc3b%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C639180864075281621%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=MIxN40DaHvY6W%2BFdH36oe9fGyGK8hAIC%2B0HroMWB6ao%3D&reserved=0" story critiques, we also offer each other help on an almost daily basis.

Recently, I reached out to them to ask for some ideas to propel me from the 1,000 words I had on the page to the 2,000 words required - for a contest submission where I'd found myself stuck. Immediately I had options: more sensory details? add a scene? setting details? flaneur? [If you don’t know what flaneur is, I can’t recommend breaking your brain on this one]. But, bottom line, having a quality writing group can make you a better writer. And in my case, a better human.

Oh, quick PSA: Make sure you choose your group wisely. Invite people who you like as humans AND respect as creatives. I think that’s the secret sauce. One, without the other, usually doesn’t lead to a satisfying (and thus, sustainable) situation.

Here's to us all finding our people!

BONUS: A Random Fact About Me (For Fun?)
I got married on a pier in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (and almost died of a collection of infections a few days later). But we salsa danced with friends and family on the beach first!

And for those of you who asked for photo evidence of my Powell’s debut (mentioned in the May newsletter), I give you these.

In case you were curious, yes, I did almost bolt at the last minute due to anxiety.

<figure data-trix-attachment='{"contentType":"image","height":666,"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/wellfleet/image/upload/c_scale,f_png,q_auto,w_1000/if_h_gt_666,b_transparent,c_pad,h_666,w_1000/vbbz19u4r2s1c2wzcq93p11uywug","width":1000}'

One of my best pieces of advice for friends and family wanting to improve their writing is... READ.

Nothing helps you internalize story structure, dialogue, and character arc like immersing yourself regularly in novels.

So, if you really want to write better, spend some time every day reading. Permission to put down the phone. Power down the laptop. Turn off the t.v. AND JUST READ INSTEAD.

If you need some ideas for books, https://bookshop.org/shop/ginahandley.

I wanted to return to one of my first loves. And, yes, that did mean closing my business, starting a new educational journey, and taking a leap of faith. But it was time. And I felt excited about hopping fully into learning the craft of fiction – and continuing work on a novel in progress.

As we chatted more with the couple in Victoria about their creative business plans, which is a place I continue to feel a bit stuck, I could feel their excitement feeding my own. I started making a checklist in my head about my own plans. I want to publish my YA book, find a home for my short stories, maybe pursue a few additional editing jobs, perhaps even do some teaching in the creative writing space. And as I allowed myself to be fully present in that moment, with those creative kindreds, I trusted that our shared excitement was a sign that we were doing what we were meant to be doing (at least for now). Them, making and selling beautiful, glass windchimes – and me, writing stories and attempting to launch them into the world.

This chance encounter on the Victoria waterfront offered me validation I didn’t realize I still needed, so I wanted to share it with you all – in case any of you might need a bit, as well. If someone is reading this newsletter looking for permission to start (or continue) a new chapter... permission granted. You’ll have plenty of company.

P.S. We also bought some really nifty Swatch watches on our trip – a throwback to our adolescent years (and a perfect souvenir).

P.S.S. For those who sent the good juju our way last month, I am happy to report that the vegetable garden is thriving. We even used some of our homegrown cilantro to make guacamole this week.

What I'm Reading

See You Yesterday

By Rachel Lynn Solomon

This was a really fun, easy YA read, reminiscent of the movie Groundhog's Day. I thoroughly enjoyed the voice of the protagonist, Barrett, delightfully quirky. And I also thought the relationship dynamic between Barrett and Miles (her friend and love interest) was well developed. I was not sure the physics aspect of this book quite worked, and to be blunt, I think Rachel could have shaved about fifty pages from the narrative and delivered a tighter overall story. Still, I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to quite enjoying this read (even if I admittedly engaged in a little “skimming” during the repetitive bits).

https://bookshop.org/a/120532/9781665901925

If you haven’t already read Rachel’s novel Weather Girl, it is my favorite of her books.

https://bookshop.org/a/120532/9780593200148

[Also read this month: The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus, Dear Henry, Love Edith, Toe to Toe, This Is Happiness, and Everything’s Coming Up Rosie]

For more book reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/88169319-gina-ma?ref=nav_mybooks&shelf=read

[Please note: The links for purchasing books are affiliate links and will offer me a small percentage of the purchase price if you choose to grab your copy of recommended books through their site. If you choose to utilize, thanks for the support!]

What I'm Watching
Have you seen the show Abbott Elementary? If not, run, don’t walk, to your nearest couch, get comfy, and start binge watching. The characters are delightful and quirky (and perfectly cast), and the storyline about the trials of teaching in an inner city school is as educational as it is hilarious (thanks to a fabulous group of writers). If you are looking for a show that is taking on the current challenges facing our educational systems, while still making you laugh out loud, this is the one. Highly recommend.

Side Note: My husband and I realized on our most recent trip to Victoria that we have a vacation show-watching ritual. Almost every day of our vacations, we watch Let’s Make a Deal and The Price is Right before starting our adventuring. Such a hit of nostalgia! Anybody else?

Also, anything you’ve seen lately that I need to add to my queue?

What I'm Writing
I have spent much of this month polishing a short story about the mysterious appearance of killer wolves wreaking havoc in the life of a terrified protagonist and her equally bewildered partner - while also completing pieces for two different writing contests (both of those stories a little less intense).

Oh, and for those who are following along with my novel news, I submitted my manuscript to two more agents this month - and received at least that many rejections from my previous months’ submissions, confirming what we all already know… that this process is not for the faint of heart. I certainly continue to ask for all of the hopeful thoughts/vibes/juju/prayers – and any agent or publisher referrals you might want to toss my way.

What’s Making Me Smile

I absolutely love these Harry Potter inspired music and ambiance videos! After visiting Hogsmeade (at Universal Studios in Hollywood) a couple of years ago, I have tried to convince my husband that we should probably move there asap. He’s tried to explain the complications, but much like my persistent requests to move to Stars Hollow, I am immune to his reasonable input.

https://youtu.be/k8rbVqiOLIM?si=paRzpw4tLOZsnLsr

If you have stumbled upon anything extra delightful lately, I am always looking to add to my "happy" files!

A Little Unsolicited Writing Advice
One of my best pieces of advice for friends and family wanting to improve their writing is... READ. Nothing helps you internalize story structure, dialogue, and character arc like immersing yourself regularly in novels.

So, if you really want to write better, spend some time every day reading.

Permission to put down the phone. Power down the laptop. Turn off the t.v. AND JUST READ INSTEAD.

If you need some ideas for books, https://bookshop.org/shop/ginahandley.

BONUS: A Random Fact About Me (For Fun?)
While doing a small, PNW book tour to promote my first book, Friending, I was invited to speak to a mostly full house at one of the largest bookstores in the country, Powell’s Books in Portland (my name was even featured on their large marquee – what??!!). Such an unexpected (and humbling and terrifying and exhilarating) honor!

And for those of you who asked for photo evidence of my big, Southern hair and preppy clothes (mentioned in the April newsletter), I give you this. In case you were curious, no, the braces did not help in my transition.

Thank you, friends, for joining me on this leg of my journey. If you have other bookish friends who might enjoy my newsletter content, please feel free to share.

And don’t forget to hit me up with some of your responses to posed questions. I really would love to hear from you!

We also started our first vegetable garden (we'll see if that endeavor brings joy or crushing disappointment), and thus, we are currently accepting all the good thoughts/vibes/juju/prayers you have to spare.

What I’m Reading

Musical Chairs

By Amy Poeppel

I enjoyed this newest offering from Amy. The protagonist, Bridget, comes across as real and relatable - even while benefitting from generational wealth - no easy feat. And I absolutely love her intimate, platonic friendship with Will. I don't think there are enough representations of healthy, longterm male-female friendships, and I think this is a wonderful rendering. I did find myself a bit mired at times in all of the moving parts of the story (and honestly think this novel would have been improved with some trimming in parts - I am not sure we needed ALL of the myriad of characters - as some of them added little to the narrative). Still, I would be lying if I said I didn't quite enjoy this read. And I will certainly buy whatever Amy puts in the world next.

If you haven’t already read her books Small Admissions and Sweet Spot, they are similarly enjoyable reads.

https://bookshop.org/a/120532/9781501176418

[Also read this month: Cover Story, Maureen (Harold Fry #3),Raiders of the Lost Heart]

For more book reviews: https://youtube.com/shorts/SSJPvYy1d_E?si=5K5xVaF0dOtlRkBN

A Little Unsolicited Writing Advice
One of the first things I learned about craft when I started taking classes was PSYCHIC DISTANCE. This one craft concept drastically changed my writing for the better, and as I employed it more, I realized it’s no great secret.

If you’ve done a lot of reading (or even movie watching), you’ve seen it utilized many times. You probably just didn’t have a frame for what you were reading/watching. In short, when you are writing your stories, consider utilizing different levels of access to your characters for different reader impact/effect. For instance, start by giving the reader a zoomed out view of the world your characters inhabit (describe the timeframe, weather, trees). Then transition a little closer and take them into the action (describe what your character is doing in the scene – this is the level where most of your story will be written). Then zoom way in and offer them access to the characters interiority (describe what the character is thinking/feeling). And feel free to play with psychic distance throughout your scenes, zooming in and out to offer the reader a rich, engaging experience (without overdoing it).

The mistake new writers often make is telling an entire story at a mid-level of psychic distance. The character did this. And then they did that. And then they did this again. They never allow a broader view of the world nor an opportunity to get really close to the characters. That was where I found myself at the start of my writing journey, but I have since tried to discipline myself in the adding of these zoomed out (and zoomed in) components in my stories, and I think this practice has taken everything to the next level.

Try it out in your next story and let me know how it goes!

BONUS: A Random Fact About Me (For Fun?)
My family moved from suburban South Carolina to (very) rural Washington State when I was in high school. I had huge, permed hair, a collection of sweater vests, and a distinct Southern accent. To say that I did not fit in amongst all of the flannel would be an understatement.

While I cannot recommend the experience, I do credit it with further developing my sense of humor):)

And for those of you who asked for photo evidence of my salsa dancing, I am sorry to report that it does not exist (at least not that I know of). However, I am including a photo of my time in Colombia (in coach/teacher versus dancer mode).

<figure data-trix-attachment='{"contentType":"image","height":666,"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/wellfleet/image/upload/c_scale,f_png,q_auto,w_1000/if_h_gt_666,b_transparent,c_pad,h_666,w_1000/o7nao1y6euz92mckp4v8ypyhdiy8","width":1000}' Her monologues are the stuff of story magic. And I had almost forgotten how much I adore Matthew from the start - and Marilla more and more as the story progresses. The rich setting details are an absolute master class. And that ending... somehow both heartbreaking and wholly satisfying.

While I must admit that there are scenes that I would have liked to be able to linger in longer (or fully experience - versus being told about and then never allowed to enter), this book is one that changed my life in my youth (and breathed new life into this season), and so I forgive its small faults. What I leave this most recent reading knowing for sure is that we need more Anne Shirleys in the world!

https://bookshop.org/a/120532/9780451528827

Also read this month: Blubber, Little Women, Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Secret Garden

For more book reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/88169319-gina-ma?ref=nav_mybooks&shelf=read

[Please note: The links for purchasing books are affiliate links and will offer me a small percentage of the purchase price if you choose to grab your copy of recommended books through their site. If you choose to utilize, thanks for the support!]

What I’m Watching
I love storytelling (in all of its forms). Right now my husband and I are obsessed with Shrinking (on Apple TV+). It just seems to get stronger and more compelling as it goes, and we are here for it.

Also, Michael J. Fox!

Oh, and on the movie front, have you seen Rental Family? I can’t stop talking about it.

Anything you’ve seen lately that I need to add to my queue?

What I’m Writing
I have spent most of this month editing (and reediting) my short stories for publication. Most recently, I have been working on a piece inspired by an unplanned reunion that changed my young life. I hope to be able to share these stories in their entirety once they find a home.

Oh, and for those who are following along with my novel news, I have sent query letters to about five agents this month. It is a slow (and confusing and sometimes overwhelming) process, but it’s all part of the journey. That said, if you know an agent or publisher who is just itching to get their hands on a YA, magical-realism book, please feel free to send them my way :)

What’s Making Me Smile

If you aren’t already familiar with We Rate Dogs, you’re welcome :)

https://youtu.be/roWnSXgLWhc?si=LWhBJG1tnomsrPT5

If you have stumbled upon anything extra delightful lately, I always love a good laugh!

A Little Unsolicited Writing Advice
When you write a story, make sure you include sensory details to help fully immerse your readers in the world you are creating. What does your protagonist see? What do they hear? What do they smell? What do they taste? What do they feel - physically and emotionally? The more concrete and specific you make these offerings, the better!

Do you have other specific questions you’d like me to tackle in coming newsletters? If yes, just send me a quick message, and I will do my best to choose one or two per month.

BONUS: A Random Fact About Me (For Fun?)
I celebrated my 30th birthday salsa dancing with friends at a club in Bogota, Colombia (where I was spending a school year volunteering at a bilingual/bicultural school).

And for those of you who asked to sneak a peek at those matching blue vests from my college singing/drama days (mentioned in the February newsletter), I must apologize. I could not find them captured in any of the photo archives, BUT in lieu of that… I offer you this treat from our BIG tryout. We wore coordinating collared shirts and black cords instead of vests, but it’s all still quite atrocious in its own right. So… Enjoy?

Thank you, friends, for joining me on this leg of my journey. If you have other bookish friends who might enjoy my newsletter content, please feel free to share.

And don’t forget to hit me up with some of your responses to posed questions. I really love to hearing from you!

Gina

This novel was no different, and I found myself quickly invested in the sympathetic protagonist, Constance, and her complex predicament. I thought the exploration of class throughout the narrative was intriguing - heartbreaking in parts. I must admit to being a little distracted in sections by the POV shifts. I predict that I would have been able to more fully settle into the story if I had been allowed to view the unfolding events consistently through Constance's eyes (I was not convinced the other POV's added much to the narrative). I was also a bit disappointed in the ending. I felt set-up for something very different, and I left the story agitated that Constance didn't ultimately get what I thought she deserved. Overall, I am certainly glad I spent the time to read this newest novel by Helen, and I will undoubtedly purchase whatever she puts out into the world next.

Final Note: Helen has some other gorgeous books in the world. If you haven’t read “Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand,” add that one to your list, too.

https://bookshop.org/a/120532/9781984801319

Somewhere Beyond the Sea

by T.J. Klune

T.J. consistently pens novels that offer readers tender lessons in empathy and found family. In this sequel to his novel “The House in the Cerulean Sea,” T.J. continues to charm with his authentic, endearing, yet wonderfully complex characters. His protagonist, Arthur Parnassus, is one of my favorites characters in modern literature. Beyond the wonderful cast of characters, we are invited to spend time in places that are vibrant and immersive. In short, T.J. invites us into a narrative that is beautiful, compelling, heartbreaking, courageous, hopeful, and timely. I needed this one, especially in this moment when I am searching for more brave voices championing equality and compassion.

https://bookshop.org/a/120532/9781250881205

[Please note: The links for purchasing books are affiliate links and will offer me a small percentage of the purchase price if you choose to grab your copy of recommended books through their site. If you choose to utilize, thanks for the support!]

What I’m Writing
I just completed a short story about a grieving father who must travel back in time to reunite with an unexpected visitor who confronts him with a powerful reminder that will ultimately save him from his worst, grief driven impulses. It is one of those projects that will stick with me for a while – both for the emotionally affecting narrative that emerged, but also for the exploration in blending genres.

What’s Making Me Smile
Amy Poehler now has a podcast, and even though I am not much of a podcast person, I am here for this one! If you’re also an Amy fan, I have included a short clip from her interview with Gwenyth Paltrow (which brought me a knowing giggle).

Amy has also hosted Carol Burnett, Paul Rudd, Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, Kathryn Hahn, Rashida Jones, Andy Samberg, Jack Black, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Adam Scott, and SO MANY OTHER SNL and Parks and Rec greats!

https://youtube.com/shorts/jfpWZxmOA4Y?si=zrOZY-0cEN1WNUV

A Little Unsolicited Writing Advice
Some time ago, I submitted a short story piece to a contest, and I received a concise (but generous) bit of writing advice from the judge.

Every good story (no matter the length) needs three main things:

1. Stakes: We have to clearly know what the protagonist wants/desires.

2. Conflict: We have to know what stands in the way of them getting what they want/desire.

3. Resolution: We have to know whether or not they ultimately get what they want/desire.

And I would add one more:

4. Reversal: We have to know how they’ve been changed along the journey.

Do you have other specific questions you’d like me to tackle in coming newsletters? If yes, just send me a quick message, and I will do my best to choose one or two per month.

BONUS: A Random Fact About Me (For Fun?)
I was part of a co-ed drama/singing team in college. We wore matching sweater vests. Enough said! :)

Oh, and a special "random" gift for those of you who asked for photographic evidence of my hula days (from January’s newsletter)… Enjoy!

Thank you, friends, for joining me on this newest leg of my journey. If you have other bookish friends who might enjoy my newsletter content, please feel free to share.

And don’t forget to hit me up with some of your responses to posed questions. I really would love to hear from you!

Gina
ginahandley.com

Happy(ish) 2026, Bookish Friends!

First things first, WELCOME to my first bookish newsletter! Thank you for being here. I am hopeful this little monthly offering will bring a smile to your face... and some inspiration for your reading/writing/creativity goals. So, without further ado...

The truth is that I just can’t quite quit Christmas this year. I mean, I am never really ready to take down the tree and put away the lights and decorations (regardless the year). But this year. This year I am even less prepared for the transition. The season has felt like a sanctuary from some really difficult realities. And I feel like I need to hold on a little longer. So, I am giving myself permission to do just that.

When I mentioned this permission to my husband, he suggested celebrating Christmas 2 (the day after Christmas), Christmas 3 (the day after that), and… Well, we’ve kept the celebration going like that for the month. I mean, we did put away some of our decorations and changed the tree lights from their colorful holiday setting to a soft white glow, but… I have made the decision that we will keep the tree up for the foreseeable future. Also the Christmas music stays (which if I’m being completely honest already plays in our home year round– one of my MANY quirky coping strategies):)

Listen, friends, life can be hard. If there are little things you can do to get through the day with a bit more ease, a bit more delight, a bit more hope… I give us all permission to do those things! For me, that will be a Christmas tree. And Christmas music. Oh, and my writing! Did I mention my novel is finally done and ready for querying?

Here’s to finding (and holding tight to) those things that bring us joy in 2026! And perhaps considering how we can share it with others!

What I've read (and loved)

The Dream Hotel

By Laila Lalami

If you are looking for a novel that will make you think, resonate deeply, and emotionally stir you, this one will not disappoint. It is one of my favorite reads of the last few years.

This novel is equal parts cautionary tale (about the surveillance we allow in our lives - and its possible implications if those surveilling choose to use our information for increasingly nefarious purposes) and timely reminder about human nature (and the things we need to survive - physically and emotionally). In addition to being a gripping topic, the writing is really well done. The protagonist is someone we relate to. The setting is one we can viscerally conjure. The pacing is perfection. And the predicament is one we could all easily imagine ourselves ensnared in (without too much reach). While there are some spaces in the book I would have liked to linger longer - and others I wasn't sure added to the narrative, I still could not wait to get back to this story each evening.

Oh, and one thing I really, REALLY loved about this novel is that, while it is undoubtedly a smart story by a smart author, it remains accessible. If I wielded such power, this would be mandatory reading for all.the.humans. In lieu of that, I will merely highly recommend it.

https://bookshop.org/a/120532/9780593317600

And a cozy(ish) read to recover I’ll Be Home for Christmas by Jenny BaylissIf you are looking for a well rendered, tropey, holiday themed treat, I recommend this one. The protagonist is real and relatable, and the unfurling romance with her childhood friend is compelling. Appropriately, we all dislike the competing love interest (even if I thought that was one of the weaker aspects of the novel - I hate when female protagonist's ignore their guts). The quirky family of origin makes up for this though by being wholly entertaining (especially the beloved aunts). And while I did find that the relationship dynamic with the protagonist's mother could have used a bit more working out, I found the forgiveness aspect endearing (if not completely satisfying). Overall, while this one has some things that didn't quite land for me, I would be lying if I said I didn't quite enjoy it.

https://bookshop.org/a/120532/9780593717929

[Please note: The links for purchasing books are affiliate links and will offer me a small percentage of the payment amount if used for grabbing your copy. If you choose to utilize, thanks for the support!]

What I'm working on
I have recently completed my first novel, a YA magical-realism novel set in the PNW, and I could not be more proud to have finished – and curious about the path ahead. Whatever that might look like, I hope my story will find its way to the right agent/publisher (and more broadly to the readers that need it most).

Additionally, I am continuing to develop short stories and launch them into the world. I recently completed both a sci-fi(ish) flash fiction piece and a horror/thriller piece for two different writing contests. Neither genre is one I ever planned to take on, but I have loved the challenge of dabbling in all brands of new spaces.

I'd love to know what you all are working on (or what you dream of working on someday). Send me a message!

What's making me smile
My husband and I *might be* a teeny bit obsessed with these “noodles.” And by "might be," I mean definitely are :)

   https://youtube.com/shorts/aHZbEF0Rd_Q?si=Buabg4WIdgTIUNlN

A little unsolicited writing advice
A lot of people send me messages these days sharing their desire to write a book, and I usually say something like “You can totally do it!” And also... “Take a class or two."

If you really want to write a book, you’ll be much more successful if you commit to learning about story structure (and setting and pacing and character development and... well, there's a lot to learn):) But I earnestly believe that learning is the path that leads to us putting things out in the world that we can be proud of, so... I think it's worth it.

I would love to share more tips about writing in coming newsletters. If you have a specific question you’d like me to attempt to answer, let me know. Otherwise, I will keep offering the unsolicited brand :)

BONUS: A random fact about me (for fun?)
My family lived in Hawaii during my childhood, and I was on a performing hula team (think grass skirt, enormous headdress, and far too much lipstick for any 7-year-old):)

What's a fun, random fact few people know about you? Could you use it in an upcoming story?

Thank you, friends, for joining me on this next leg of my journey. Please feel free to share this newsletter with other bookish friends who might enjoy the content.

And don't forget to email me with your answers to some of the posed questions! I'd love to connect!
